Elizabeth Olsen’s love of Star Wars led her to sign up for blockbuster roles like Marvel’s Scarlet Witch

January 20, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Elizabeth Olsen, who plays the Scarlet Witch in the MCU, says her love of Star Wars was what caused her to move away from indies and enter the blockbuster space.

Once upon a time, Elizabeth Olsen was known for her sterling work in the indie movie space. Now the actress is recognised around the world for being Wanda, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What caused the change in career direction? Well, according to Olsen, it was her love for Star Wars that inspired her to pursue the blockbuster roles she has now become famous for. Speaking to Collider, she said:

“It was actually a funny decision I had put out in the world. I talked to my agent, my manager who are like my other mothers. I just love them so much. And I told them, ‘I want to be considered for the projects that I grew up …’ – like, as a kid, looking at Star Wars and I was obsessed with Star Wars. You couldn’t peel me away from Star Wars as a child. And so I was trying to figure out, how do I start putting that out there because I feel like all I’m getting are these really disturbed women in independent films. [Laughs] [Now] it’s just a disturbed woman in a big franchise! They said take meetings with the people who run these companies and so I literally did. I met with Kevin [Feige] and a couple other people that were working there at the time. And then I met with the people who were running Legendary at the time. And there were a few others in different places.”

It seems that Olsen and Kevin Feige have a love of Star Wars in common. Who knows, perhaps we could see Olsen in a Star Wars project one day, maybe even Feige’s own movie that he will be producing? Something to keep an eye on. Right now, Olsen can be seen reprising her MCU role in WandaVision for Disney+.

Marvel Studios’ captivating new series WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany and marks the first series from Marvel Studios streaming exclusively on Disney+. The series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

WandaVision is set to premiere January 15th, 2021, and features a cast that includes Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis), Randall Park (Agent Jimmy Woo), Teyonah Parris (Empire) as Monica Rambeau, and Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms) as Agnes.
