HBO’s The Last of Us TV series finds new director with Beanpole filmmaker

January 16, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Last year, it was announced that HBO and PlayStation Productions were adapting the hit PlayStation video game The Last of Us into a television series, and now, the upcoming series has found its new director following the departure of pilot director Johan Renck.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pilot episode of The Last of Us TV series will now be directed by Beanpole helmer Kantemir Balagov which was co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and The Last of Us video game creative director Neil Druckmann.

The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie, two survivors of a post-apocalyptic world after a viral pandemic transformed people into mindless, ravaging monsters. As Joel and Ellie travel across the country and fend off monsters and humans, they have to learn who they really are in their fight for survival and redemption. The critically praised first game was followed by a 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part II.
