Anthony Mackie says it would mean “everything” to him to headline his own Captain America movie

May 1, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Last week it was announced that Marvel has enlisted The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman to develop a fourth Captain America movie, which – given the events of the Disney+ series’ finale – will presumably follow Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as he embraces the mantle of the Sentinel of Liberty.

However, that’s technically unconfirmed at this point, with Mackie claiming earlier in the week that he only found out about the news while he was out grocery shopping: “The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like, ‘Yo, man. Is this real?!” [holds up a cellphone] “I’m like, ‘I haven’t heard anything.’ That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they’re like, ‘Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what’s going on.’ So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything.”

While Mackie clearly isn’t giving anything away, he did go on to explain to USA Today just how much it would mean to him to headline is own Marvel movie with Captain America 4:

“That would be everything. It’s funny, because I’ve been doing this for so long. Getting into the business, I had two wishes for my agent at the time: I want to do a Western, preferably with Clint Eastwood, and I want to be a superhero. That was all I wanted, and after that I’m done. I’ll go make po’ boys at a local po’ boys stand downtown. The idea of being the title character in a Marvel movie, there’s no words to describe that, especially as a Black actor. Black actors don’t get those opportunities. And to have that opportunity, for all the work that I had to do, the 11 years of training, all the stuff that I had to do to get here, it would be a monumental feat.”
