Evil Dead Rise director reveals that filming has started in New Zealand

June 8, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) has revealed that Evil Dead Rise, the latest feature film in the long-running Evil Dead franchise, has officially begun filming in New Zealand.

Evil Dead Rise is set to follow two estranged sisters, portrayed by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. The film has been confirmed to build off the original trilogy, rather than the 2013 reboot, as well as moving out of the woods and into a modern-day urban setting.

Unfortunately, it remains unlikely that Ashley “Ash” J. Williams actor Bruce Campbell will be making an appearance as he has already publicly revealed that he has retired from the role following the cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead in favour of becoming a producer on the Evil Dead series. Evil Dead Rise is set to be produced by Campbell and franchise creator Sam Raimi.
