Exclusive Interview – LEGO Masters Season 2 – First Eliminated Contestants

June 11, 2021 by Tai Freligh

Tai Freligh interviews this week’s eliminated LEGO Masters contestants…

Hosted by actor and producer Will Arnett, season two of LEGO Masters airs every Tuesday (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, bringing imagination, design and creativity to life when teams of LEGO enthusiasts go head-to-head, with infinite possibilities and an unlimited supply of LEGO bricks. Once again, teams of two will compete against each other in even more ambitious brick-building challenges – including an earthquake tower challenge, a demolition derby, a LEGO fashion show and more – to be crowned the country’s most talented amateur LEGO builders. Each week, Flickering Myth’s Tai Freligh will be chatting with the eliminated contestants.  This week Tai talks with Jack and Dawn, a brother and sister team, who build in honor of their great niece Kelsey, about their time on the show, lessons learned and more about the build that ended their time on the show.

Talk about auditioning for the show and what it was like to get selected?

Dawn: There were many steps to the audition process, and I didn’t honestly think we would get selected to move on to the next step each time. We knew there were so many talented builders out there and ours was a shot in the dark. I didn’t even tell my husband that I had applied until things really started to get real… no need to plan for something that probably wasn’t going to happen. Once we flew to Atlanta, it was still hard to believe and when one of the producers told us we had made it as cast members of LEGO Masters season 2, he had to repeat it as it still hadn’t sunk in.

Jack: Auditioning for the show had many hoops to jump through but was also fun. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and be disqualified, but it never happened. It really didn’t sink in that we made it on the show until we are on the set in an interview and one of the producers told us the second time. Lol.

What was your experience like being on the show?
Dawn: The experience of being on LEGO Masters is so hard to describe. It is one of the most amazing experiences, and at time the most stressful experiences, you could ever imagine. We have made not just lifelong friends with the other cast members, but they are now truly family. They are definitely amazing builders – all of them – but even more importantly, they are some of the most kind-hearted people you could ever hope to meet.

Jack: The only way I can describe being on the show was surreal. It was amazing.

What build are you most proud of?
Dawn: I am supremely proud of both of our builds, but the size and majesty of the butterfly, and what and who it represented will make me smile for many years to come.

Jack: I am proudest of our parade float as it represented our great niece Kelsey.

Tell us what you were trying to do with the build that ended up getting you eliminated?
Dawn: We both grew up in and currently live in Small Town(s), USA. Our build showed some of the details of the old buildings that line the streets of those towns and we wanted to make it look as realistic as possible. The town had basically rolled up the streets at night and Opal the Jewel Thief had all the time in the would to destroy the rats and their Jewelry Store.

Jack: We were trying to exemplify a small town street scene in our last build.

What lessons will you take with you from your time on the show with the judges?

Dawn: There are three major lessons that I have learned from the time we spent on LEGO Masters… You don’t know what you can do until you try, never give up, and always have a Plan B (or C… or D).

Jack: The lessons I took away are to always have a backup plan and never give up.

Hosted by actor and producer Will Arnett, Season Two of LEGO Masters premieres Tuesday, June 1 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, bringing imagination, design and creativity to life when teams of LEGO enthusiasts go head-to-head, with infinite possibilities and an unlimited supply of LEGO bricks. Once again, teams of two will compete against each other in even more ambitious brick-building challenges – including an earthquake tower challenge, a demolition derby, a LEGO fashion show and more – to be crowned the country’s most talented amateur LEGO builders. In each episode, Arnett, alongside expert Brickmasters and LEGO employees Amy Corbett and Jamie Berard, will encourage the builders, introduce incredible challenges and put their creativity and skills to the test. The competing pairs who impress the Brickmasters the most will progress to the next round, until the finale, during which the top teams will face off for a $100,000 cash prize, the ultimate LEGO trophy and the grand title of LEGO MASTERS.
