Benedict Wong on getting the call for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

July 28, 2021 by Gary Collinson

While Marvel usually likes to keep things close to its chest, the studio did spoil one surprise from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with its latest trailer revealing that Doctor Strange’s Wong is set to square off with The Incredible Hulk villain Abomination in some kind of cage match.

Speaking to SYFY Wire, actor Benedict Wong has been discussing his casting in Shang-Chi, which will see him portraying Wong for a fourth time after roles in Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame:

“When Shang-Chi was happening, I was so pleased that it was happening but I was a little kind of crestfallen I wasn’t a part of it,” said Wong. “Then the call [from Marvel Studios] came. And I was like, ‘Yes!’ You know, I’m super thrilled… to be sat at a table of Asian excellence, it was amazing. I’m a big fan of all of those artists. Tony Leung [Chiu-wai] is a massive idol of mine. So it’s been constant surprises, that’s what [the role of Wong] gives me.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will open in September, while Wong will also be returning to the MCU next year as he reunites with fellow sorcerer Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy) and stars Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) as Shang-Chi, Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs) as Wenwu, Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) as Katy, newcomer Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery) as Jiang Nan, Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians) as Jon Jon, Fala Chen (The Undoing) as Jiang Li, Florian Munteanu (Creed II) as Razor Fist, Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange) as Wong and Dallas Liu (Pen15) in an undisclosed role.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set for release on September 3rd.
