Jennifer Hudson defends Cats, says it was “misunderstood”

August 18, 2021 by EJ Moreno

No one can forget the insanity around the Cats film. From its first trailer to its rocky release, the musical had quite the journey to infamy.

Tom Hooper’s Cats was met with much flack and turned into a meme almost instantly. However, it seems like not everyone viewed the film that way. In a new interview with Total Film, actress Jennifer Hudson opened up about the movie and its reception, calling it “misunderstood”.

“I loved that you asked about Cats!” Hudson told Total Film during an interview for her new film Respect. “You know what? I think it was a bit overwhelming. It’s unfortunate that it was misunderstood. I think later down the line, people will see it differently. But it is something I am still very proud of and grateful to have been a part of. Yeah, I got to be Grizabella the Glamour Cat!”

Jennifer Hudson’s pride for this work is admirable, which speaks to the small group who embraced Cats as a camp classic. Thankfully, Hudson didn’t walk away from the film empty-handed as she saw great praise for her musical number and even adapted some cats during production. She’d go on to name them after her character and Idris Elba’s villainous feline.  “They are the best thing I’ve ever had. I love them so much,” Hudson says of her furry friends.
