Marina Sirtis joins Freema Agyeman in new Doctor Who adventure The Year of Martha Jones

August 20, 2021 by Andrew Newton

Ever wondered what Martha Jones got up to in her time travelling the world during the events of the Year that Never Was?  Well, this December Big Finish will release The Year of Martha Jones, a brand-new box set of full-cast audio adventures which may help shed light on what she got up to while the Master and the Toclafane ruled the Earth.

In this new box set, Tenth Doctor’s Martha Jones features in three new adventures that follow her story as she travelled the world spreading the tale of how the Doctor will be the one capable of saving everyone on Earth from the machinations of the Master.

Freema Agyeman is joined by Marina Sirtis, who played Deanna Troy in Star Trek: the Next Generation, who makes her debut for Big Finish as Martha’s friend Karen.  Sirtis stars in the first of the three new episodes, The Last Diner.

Marina Sirtis said, “When people ask me who my first Doctor was, it was the First Doctor. As an actor, I’m all about performances, and Doctor Who has always employed fine actors – it’s a very unique and special show.  And this box set tells us that stories are important, which is why they last – they are handed down from generation to generation, and are what give our imaginations flight.”

Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures actor Julie Graham plays Miss Beecham, an ambitious agent of the Master. Said, “I love the whole Doctor Who franchise – it’s just such a national treasure, it’s part of our Britishness and it’s just lovely to be a part of it in any way whatsoever. And what’s lovely about doing audio is that there’s no pressure, and you can really play with it and go for it.”

Miss Beecham isn’t the only traitor to humanity, in the third episode, Deceived, Mr Strand (played by Game of Thrones actor Gethin Anthony) will also be causing trouble for Martha.

Legendary voice artist Lorelei King (Alien: Covenant) is returning to Big Finish as resistance leader Jessie Grant.  “I love my character – she really is a very maternal character, in that she is making sure that everyone is okay. She has her private reasons for this that we learn, and although she has a hard exterior, it’s a hard world!”

The Year of Martha Jones  is available to pre-order as a digital download for £16.99, or Collector’s Edition CD at £19.99 from the Big Finish website.
