Warrior TV series in development, reveals director Gavin O’Connor

September 17, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Ten years on from the film’s release, Warrior director Gavin O’Connor has revealed that he’s planning a return to the world of Mixed Martial Arts with a TV series spinoff which is currently in development.

“It has the spirit of the movie – it’s dealing with social issues that are important to me,” revealed O’Connor during an interview with The Playlist. “Warrior took [an] American working-class reeling from the one-two punch of war and recession. I’m taking my same rage and anger than I’m feeling today about social issues – whether it’s poverty or incarceration or addiction, mental health – and I’m infusing that inside new characters.”

While the movie focussed on Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton’s estranged brothers, O’Connor went on to reveal that the series will instead focus on four characters – two men and two women, including a Muslin fighter from Paris and a character from Ireland alongside two Americans – who are competing in an MMA tournament. One of the characters will also be portrayed by UFC legend Daniel Cormier in his first acting role.
