Star-Lord T’Challa spinoff series was in the works, reveals Marvel’s What If…? director

October 10, 2021 by EJ Moreno

The tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman sent shockwaves through the lives of his family and the industry he loved so much. From award-winning roles to his hit Marvel performances, Boseman won over people with his charm and talent.

His final role came recently with his voice work in Marvel’s What If?… series on Disney+. Fans and critics were delighted by his turn as Star-Lord in an episode that saw T’Challa abducted by the Ravagers and become the Guardians of Galaxy leader.

Boseman’s performance was so strong that Disney and Marvel even had plans to give him a spin-off series based on this What If?… incarnation the character, with series director Bryan Andrews opening up to Variety about how there were plans to explore the further adventures of Star-Lord T’Challa.

“Chadwick had recorded his Star-Lord T’Challa stuff early. But we had those later episodes that he appeared in sporadically, and it was a long stretch before we got him [again]. And it was not long after the final recording that he passed. I think it was maybe just a few months or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But, um, we got him in time to have everything.”

Andrews adds, “I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him — and also this new version of Star-Lord T’Challa was so important to him. He dug it.”

“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star-Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and that crew and that whole thing,” said Andrews. “We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”

Marvel’s What If…? season two is currently in the works, while season one is available to stream in its entirety now on Disney+.
