Darth Maul Star Wars animated series reportedly in the works

November 5, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Although Darth Maul’s story came to an end with his last outing in Star Wars Rebels, where – SPOILERS – he found himself on the losing end of a rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi – there’s still plenty to explore when it comes to the former Sith apprentice, particularly as his cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story appeared to be setting him up for a major comeback as the head of the Crimson Dawn Crime Syndicate.

The box office failure of Solo may have put paid to any plans to continue that thread on the big screen, and with Lucasfilm’s live-action Disney+ shows seemingly concentrating on other elements of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels (Mandalore/Darksaber/Ahsoka/Thrawn et al) in a post-OT timeline, it seems that Maul could be gearing up for a return to animation.

According to a rumour from Cinelinx, Lucasfilm Animation is currently developing a new animated series which will take place prior to Solo and will focus on Maul’s rise to the top of the underworld. Sam Witwer is said to be on board to once again lend his voice to the Zabrak, with Paul Bettany also potentially reprising his role as crime lord Dryden Vos.

While the report remains unconfirmed at present, an animated show would make sense given that there’s plenty of material to explore and familiar underworld characters and locations who could feature in the series. Maul is also an incredibly popular character who became a key part of Clone Wars and Rebels after being controversially resurrected following his “death” in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, so the animated audience is already there. And let’s face it, Disney probably isn’t casting Ray Park as a live-action Maul any time soon after last year’s Instagram controversy.
