Ridley Scott confirms Gladiator 2 script is finished

November 16, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Back in November 2018, it was announced that Paramount had officially greenlit a sequel to Gladiator, and now, director Ridley Scott has provided an update on the long-gestating project.

In an interview with Deadline, Scott confirmed that the script has been written and the sequel is currently set to enter production after Kitbag, the next film Scott is scheduled to direct.

“Oh, it’s been written. It’s already been written. We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go. You can’t just do another Gladiator type movie. You’ve got to follow…there’s enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it.”

Producer Walter F. Parkes confirmed back in 2019 that the film will be set 25-30 years after the original and will follow Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark), the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus. Although no casting details have been announced so far, Nielsen has previously revealed that she will be making an appearance in the upcoming sequel.
