Star Wars Disney+ series The Acolyte casts Amandla Stenberg in lead role

December 9, 2021 by Ricky Church

The next Star Wars series for Disney+ The Acolyte has found its lead actress. Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) is the first to join the series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland.

The Acolyte is described as “a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era,” a time set 300 years before the Prequel Trilogy which is currently being explored in the Star Wars High Republic book series starting with The Light of the Jedi. The High Republic era lasted until approximately 50 years before The Phantom Menace so ‘the final days’ will likely be in that timeframe.

Whereas most Star Wars films and television series have focused on the heroic Jedi, The Acolyte will be much more Dark Side based as an acoylte usually refers to a Force user with a cultish devotion to the Dark Side or is a student of a Sith Lord. We’ll see how Stenberg’s acoylte fits in to the Star Wars universe and if they are somehow tied to the rise of Darth Bane and Darth Sidious.

The Acolyte will begin production in mid-2022.
