Cartoon Saloon’s My Father’s Dragon flying onto Netflix

April 25, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Just the mere mention of Cartoon Saloon should be enough to grab your attention. The Academy Award-nominated animation studio behind some of the best films, let alone animated ones, of the last decade have just announced that their next fantastical fable My Father’s Dragon is heading to Netflix, and have released this image to celebrate.

Based on Ruth Stiles Gannett’s award-winning children’s book My Father’s Dragon, the film tells the story of boy named Elmer, who struggles to cope after a move to the city with his mother. Elmer runs away in search of Wild Island and a young dragon who waits to be rescued. Elmer’s adventures force him to confront ferocious beasts, a mysterious island and the friendship of a lifetime. The films official synopsis is as follows:

From five-time Academy Award®-nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, Wolfwalkers) and Academy Award®-nominated director Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner), comes an exquisite film inspired by the Newbery-honored children’s book from author Ruth Stiles Gannett. Struggling to cope after a move to the city with his mother, Elmer runs away in search of Wild Island and a young dragon who waits to be rescued. Elmer’s adventures introduce him to ferocious beasts, a mysterious island and the friendship of a lifetime.

As if the new film from studio who gave us Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers wasn’t enough, My Father’s Dragon also has one heck of a voice cast that includes Jacob Tremblay, Gaten Matarazzo, Golshifteh Farahani, Dianne Wiest, Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd, Judy Greer, Alan Cumming, Yara Shahidi, Jackie Earle Haley, Mary Kay Place, Leighton Meester, Spence Moore II, Adam Brody, Charlyne Yi, Maggie Lincoln, Jack Smith with Whoopi Goldberg and Ian McShane.
