Max Payne remakes announced by Remedy and Rockstar

April 8, 2022 by Ricky Church

Max Payne is going to return on gaming consoles as Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games have announced they are remaking Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne for current gen consoles.

Released in 2001, Max Payne followed the titular NYPD officer as he went undercover to find the people responsible for the murder of his wife and infant child. Max Payne was a huge success with its neo-noir story, characters and game mechanics, most notably its revolutionary use of bullet-time in gameplay. It launched a sequel in 2003 titled Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne while Max Payne 3 came nearly a decade later.

Remedy developed the first two games while Rockstar developed the third, though their partnership dates all the way back to the original game as Rockstar published it and its sequel. The Max Payne and Max Payne 2 remakes will be developed by Remedy and released as a single title. From the sounds of their announcement, it will be a full remake from the ground up “in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production” that will use Remedy’s Northlight engine, the same one used for Control and the in-development Alan Wake 2.

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Rockstar founder Sam Houser. “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

“Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same,” said Tero Virtala, Remedy’s CEO. “We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”

Remedy and Rockstar will release the Max Payne remakes for PC, Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5. They are currently in the concept development stage so it will be a long while still before the games are fully developed and released.
