HBO renews Our Flag Means Death for second season

June 1, 2022 by Ricky Church

The Revenge will set sail once again as HBO has renewed Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby and David Jenkins’ pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death for a second season.

Our Flag Means Death follows Darby’s Stede Bonnet in a comedic twist based on the life of the man. He exchanges his life of high society for the high seas in a desire to become a “gentleman pirate”,  but his naivety and cluelessness doesn’t win him the respect of his crew and nearly gets them killed several times. A chance encounter with the infamous Blackbeard, played by Waititi, changes that as they become friends and even strike up an unlikely romance.

“We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet,” said Jenkins, who created and wrote the series. “Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible.”

After trading in his comfortable life for one of a buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of a pirate ship, but struggles to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew. Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard.

Our Flag Means Death features a cast that includes Rhys Darby, Taika Waititi, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones.
