Ryan Gosling returning for The Gray Man sequel, spinoff also in the works

July 27, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Enough people must have streamed at least five minutes of Netflix’s much-ballyhooed The Gray Man for the streaming service to fire off the news that we’re not only getting a sequel to the $200M budgeted action flick, but there’s also a spin-off in development.

Following its debut at #1 in 92 countries, Netflix announced their plans for the Gray Man IP to become a major spy franchise with a direct sequel that’s already in development, with star Ryan Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to return, and that a spin-off film, which will be written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland), will explore a different element of the universe. Like all good spies, the logline for both films are being kept under wraps.

Responding to the news Joe and Anthony Russo said “The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for The Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”

Let’s be honest here, aside from Gosling’s charm The Gray Man was paint-by-numbers action bingo, so at least these additional movies might give the filmmakers the opportunity to try and make the first unique big-budget Netflix blockbuster with the sequel/spin-off.

The Gray Man is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and features a cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Dhanush, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Regé-Jean Page, Julia Butters, Eme Ikwuakor, and Scott Haze.

The Gray Man is CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.

The Gray Man is currently streaming on Netflix.
