Ariana DeBose to lead Disney’s animated musical Wish

September 10, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Ever wondered how the iconic Disney wishing star came to be? No, us either, but the Mouse House are going to tell us anyway in their all-new animated feature film Wish.

Announced at the D23 Expo event, the Wishing Star origin story will be headlined by West Side Story‘s Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, and directed by Frozen’s Chris Buck and Raya and the Last Dragon‘s Fawn Veerasunthorn.

According to Deadline, DeBose will star as Asha, Wish‘s 17-year-old heroine who’s driven, incredibly smart and an optimist, a sharp-witted leader in the making who sees darkness that others do not. She’s navigating a Kingdom of Wishes, where wishes can literally come true.

Asha makes an impassioned plea to the stars, wishing for guidance and help, and ends up bringing an actual star — a cosmic force that’s a literal ball of energy and communicates through pantomime — down from the sky.

Featuring songs from Grammy nominee Julia Michaels, a cast that includes Alan Tudyk as Valentino the goat, and a villain who’s set to be one of the most formidable foes in Disney history, Wish will be released in November 2023.
