Charlie Cox says Daredevil: Born Again will be mature, but less gory than the Netflix show

December 22, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Charlie Cox is preparing to suit up as Daredevil again, a task he’s more than prepared to do, and in a new interview with NME, the actor dove into reviving the series, this time on Disney+.

Cox has already appeared on the streamer, making a memorable cameo in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, and will return for Daredevil: Born Again in 2024, which is gearing up to go into production in the New Year.

During the chat with NME, the actor says he’s excited to dive into the character, bringing back the moody and mature themes Daredevil is known for in the comics and the previous Netflix series. Cox tells NME they’ll keep some of the more adult stylings that made his take so beloved.

“My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience,” said Cox. “My instinct is that on Disney+, it will be dark, but it probably won’t be as gory. I would say to [people hoping the Disney+ show copies the Netflix show], we’ve done that. Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?”

The actor adds that the Daredevil revival will be a daunting task, taking nearly an entire year to film. “They said to me, ‘We’re going to be shooting in 2023’,” Cox said to NME. “I said, ‘Great, when?’ They said, ‘All 2023’. I start shooting in February and finish in December.”

The extended shooting schedule is due to the additional episodes the series will produce, going for an 18-episode mini-series. “I’m fascinated to discover why they’ve chosen to do 18,” Cox said. “I’m imagining there’s going to be an element to it that is like the old-school procedural show. Not necessarily case-of-the-week, but something where we go really deep into Matt Murdock, the lawyer, and get to see what his life is like. If that’s done right and he really gets his hands dirty with that world… I think there’s something quite interesting about that.”

Daredevil: Born Again will be written and executive produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Covert Affairs). Along with Cox, the series will see Vincent D’Onofrio back as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin alongside new MCU additions Michael Gandolfino (The Many Saints of Newark), Margarita Levieva (The Deuce) and Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Daredevil: Born Again is set to debut its 18-episode series on  Disney+ in 2024.
