Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw sequel dead in the water?

December 15, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The hits keep coming for Dwayne Johnson, and we aren’t talking box office hits here. As Black Adam fizzles at cinemas, no matter what Hollywood math Johnson tries to pull out, it looks like another one of his franchises won’t be moving forward.

There’s a new story that suggests any future Hobbs & Shaw movies will not be moving forward at this time. The Fast & Furious franchise spin-off saw Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in leading roles, with David Leitch helming the feature.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Leitch’s wife and a producer on the film Kelly McCormick says there’s been no chatter about returning to the Fast & Furious universe.

“There are no conversations at this time,” says the producer. “I do feel like there were a lot of seeds planted to try to create a spin-off in a way that included a Kevin Hart and a Ryan Reynolds and sort of all that kind of stuff. That was intentional but not necessarily because we had plans in mind, just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with if anybody or we wanted to go for it in a different way.”

“So, you know, I don’t know, I mean, Dwayne’s a really busy guy, and you know; he would be the one to motivate all of that,” she continues. “So, you know, we’re ready if he wants to, and until then, he’s just dominating, so all power to him.”

Though it was a modest success upon its release, Hobbs & Shaw saw mixed reviews and quickly became forgotten in the sea of Dwayne Johnson action movies released in the last five years. While we await any word on his Fast & Furious spinoff future, Johnson will look to launch another franchise with Red One, which he is currently filming alongside Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons.
