Paramount+ rolls the dice on live-action Dungeons & Dragons series

January 10, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Paramount has rolled the dice on yet more live-action Dungeons & Dragons with the news that they’ve given the green light to Red Notice‘s Rawson Marshall Thurber to direct an eight-episode series for the Paramount+ streaming service.

Paramount Pictures must like what they’ve seen from the forthcoming Chris Pine action-fantasy Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and so they’re keen to create their own expansion pack in the form of a small screen iteration of the popular roleplaying fantasy game.

According to Deadline, Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also has Central Intelligence and Skyscraper on his CV, has written the pilot script and is set to direct the first episode of a Dungeons & Dragons series.

A co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, it is being reported that the Dungeons & Dragons series will be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, with the intention of starting that most lucrative of cross-platform properties; the shared universe.

Dungeons & Dragons has remained a popular fantasy role-playing game for well over 40 years. The multi-sided dice event was previously adapted for the big screen by New Line Cinema in 2000, and while the film proved to be a critical and commercial disaster, it did spawn a made for TV sequel in 2005 and a straight-to-video third instalment in 2011.

Perhaps most fondly remembered is the animated Dungeons & Dragons show, which ran for three seasons between 1983 and 1985, and focused on a group of friends who are transported into the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, and must try to find their way home whilst being pursued by the evil wizard Venger, who was voiced by Transformers stalwart Peter Cullen.
