Knock at the Cabin ends Avatar: The Way of Water’s seven-week run at the top of the box office

February 6, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

M. Night Shyamalan’s apocalyptic-horror was doing more than just knocking on cabin doors at the weekend, it was knocking billion-dollar box-office behemoth Avatar: The Way of Water from the top spot after seven weeks.

Knock at the Cabin, Shyamalan’s fifteenth feature-film, won the weekend with $14.2 million, which comes in slightly below estimations, as-well-as the opening weekend of 2021’s Old, which bowed with $16.8 million during a pandemic-affected release window and went on to make $48 million domestic and $90 million worldwide.

These days Shyamalan movies are always about the bigger picture, with the director self-financing all his films since The Visit, which cost $5 million to produce and earned $98 million at the global box-office. It’s all about how audiences react (you can read our ★★★★ review here) following the opening weekend and whether those multipliers hold. Estimates have Knock at the Cabin budgeted at around $20 million, so it’s off to a decent start.

However Knock at the Cabin performs, it will ultimately become the answer to the quiz-question about which film knocked Avatar: The Way of Water from it’s pedestal, with James Cameron’s all-conquering sequel slipping to number three with an estimated $10.8 million for the weekend. Don’t feel too bad for it though, because that lifted its figures to $636 million domestic and $2.174 billion at the worldwide box-office.

Sandwiched between Knock and Avatar was NFL-themed sports-comedy 80 for Brady (read our ★ ★ review here), which capitalised on its proximity to Super Bowl Weekend, and was able to find a little extra distance in its arm because of that, grossing a solid $12.5 million for the 3-day frame.
