Early Blue Beetle box office tracking suggests $12-$17 million opening weekend

July 20, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Despite James Gunn reiterating that Blue Beetle was to be a part of his new DC Universe, it appears that audiences just aren’t willing to show up for the final few movies before the great DC reset, with reports suggesting that early tracking on the film has it down for an opening weekend in the $12-$17 million range.

With the recent reports of reshoots and uninspiring test-screenings for the oft-delayed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Warner  Bros. and DC Films were surely hoping that Blue Beetle might be able to avoid the same fate as box-office bombs Shazam: Fury of the Gods and The Flash in order to provide a much needed win before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s tenure truly begins.

However, the long range box-office forecast by Box Office Pro has the superhero origin story opening with a $12-$17 million weekend, and an expected domestic total of between $27-$55 million.

Originally intended as an HBO Max Original, Warner Bros. and DC Films promoted Blue Beetle to the big-screen long before the much-publicised restructure was announced.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario), Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), George Lopez (Rio), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle is set for release on August 18th 2023.
