The Marvels will combat superhero fatigue by being “really wacky and silly”, says director Nia DaCosta

August 12, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Are we getting something new from The Marvels since the film’s director Nia DaCosta notes it will take us to “worlds that you haven’t seen before,” or will it be more of the MCU comedy? Only time will tell, but the filmmaker behind Marvel Studios’ big fall release has promised something different than what we usually get with the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel.

In an interview with Total Film, DaCosta looked at the state of the MCU and superhero films overall, which helped dictate the style of the sequel: “I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists. The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that [The Marvels is] really wacky and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

DaCosta’s comments about something different from the MCU being “wacky and silly” have left some fans a little perplexed. The statement comes not long after actor Adam Devine claimed Marvel has hindered comedy movies, so it’s a bit ironic. While Marvel Studios has tried to shift to more drama-focused content, we aren’t even a full year removed from the wacky She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series, so it’s safe to say the MCU brand does lean silly.

Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels flies into cinemas on November 10th, 2023.
