Daisy Ridley is excited about Rey’s return to Star Wars in a story “really worth telling”

November 22, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Amongst all of the Alderaan Asteroid field amount of news that flies at us about Star Wars, the return of Rey in an as yet untitled outing is one of the most exciting, and Daisy Ridley has been echoing those sentiments during a recent interview, revealing that it’s a story “really worth telling.”

Following the the now-resolved SAG-AFTRA strikes, Ridley was doing some retrospective promotion for her starring role in The Marsh King’s Daughter (read our review here), and whilst speaking with The Hollywood Reporter she revealed how Rey’s return happened very quickly, so much so that before she knew it she was being summoned to the Star Wars Celebration stage by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

“When I was at Sundance, I did not know. I shot my movie [Magpie] when I got back, and I had a breakfast with Kathy [Kennedy] that I thought was just breakfast, and then it was mentioned, so I thought about it. I loved the story, and I was like, ‘Okay.’ Things then happened quite quickly, and it felt like I was instantaneously on a stage being introduced by Sharmeen [Obaid-Chinoy].

“It honestly took me back to being 20 or 21, however old I was, when [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] was announced. I was petrified, I was overwhelmed, I was really nervous but the response was really wonderful. And I’m genuinely really excited about the next one. I haven’t read anything, but I know the story. It’s really worth telling, worth exploring, and I think people will be excited.”

Set 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the film is being written by Peaky Blinders and Locke’s Steven Knight.

The news comes as the galaxy far, far away falls under the stewardship of Star Wars royalty, Dave Filoni, who has just been promoted to Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, where he will work alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and head of development Carrie Beck to develop further Star Wars films and television series.
