Cillian Murphy producing and possibly starring in 28 Years Later

January 31, 2024 by EJ Moreno

With an Oscar nomination for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy is taking his newfound prestige clout and returning to his roots in horror.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Murphy is set to make his zombie return for 28 Years Later, serving as an executive producer for now. The most delightful twist is that THR notes Murphy is in talks to star in the third installment.

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are behind the project, with Boyle directing a script from Garland. Their hotly-anticipated 28 Years Later also just landed at Sony, but details regarding the deal are unavailable.

2002’s 28 Days Later was made for $8 million and grossed $85.7 million worldwide. Robert Carlyle-headlined 28 Weeks Later dropped in 2007 but didn’t reach the same heights as the original, partially due to Boyle and Garland just executive producing.

At one point, a sequel, which would be named 28 Months Later, was discussed, but enough time had passed, so the creative team went with the 28 Years Later title.

Cillian Murphy had his career launched with 28 Days Later, before going on to star in the likes of Batman Begins, Inception, Peaky Blinders, and 2023’s Oppenheimer.
