James Cameron is hoping for Avengers fatigue

April 22, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With Avengers: Infinity War just a few days out from release, filmmaker James Cameron has taken a moment out of production on his four Avatar sequels to share a few words on superhero movies and their dominance of the multiplexes.

“I’m hoping we’ll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon,” said Cameron in an interview with IndieWire. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”

Of course, when Warner Bros. tried to do something a little different than your typical hyper-gonadal male superhero movie with last year’s Wonder Woman, Cameron wasn’t particularly impressed either, stating that Patty Jenkins’ movie was a “step backwards” for the portrayal of females in film.

Cameron will surely be hoping that audiences don’t suffer from Avatar fatigue, given that he plans to release Avatar 2 in 2020, followed by Avatar 3 in 2021, Avatar 4 in 2024 and Avatar 5 in 2025.

What do you make of Cameron’s comments? Can you see audiences suffering Avengers / superhero movie fatigue any time soon? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
