Rumour: Warner Bros. looking to hire an all-female crew for DC’s Birds of Prey

May 20, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month it was announced that Warner Bros. has enlisted up and coming filmmaker Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) to direct Birds of Prey, a “girl gang” movie featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn alongside other prominent female DC characters, thought to include the likes of Batgirl, Black Canary and the Huntress.

Earlier in the week, Robbie – who is also serving as producer on the film, as well as reprising her Suicide Squad role – spoke about how important it was to find a female director for the project, and if a new rumour from Heroic Hollywood is to be believed, it seems the plan may be to enlist an all-female crew for the movie.

Given that a male producer has already announced in Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya), it would seem there’s a definite whiff of fake news about this rumour, so be sure to take it with a pinch of salt.

While an all-female crew may sound great in principal, one also has to wonder how feasible it would be to hire women for every single position on what is sure to be a very large production with presumably a minimum of a thousand jobs to fill. Sounds like a logistical nightmare, and time that would surely be better spent elsewhere to ensure the movie is as good as it possibly can be.

If reports are to be believed, filming on Birds of Prey is due to get underway late 2018 / early 2019, meaning we should expect to see Harley and company some time in 2020.
