George R.R. Martin’s The Ice Dragon heading to the big screen

May 24, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin’s children’s fantasy novel The Ice Dragon is heading to the big screen, with THR reporting that Warner Animation Group has picked up the rights and is developing an animated feature adaptation.

Published in 1980, The Ice Dragon revolves around “Adara, a young girl who makes a special connection with a feared and mythic ice dragon. When another breed of dragon flies in to destroy her world, the girl and dragon must find a way to stop the invaders.”

GRRM is set to serve as producer on the movie, and may also write the screenplay for the adaptation – which would presumably push back the release of the last two books in his A Song of Ice and Fire Saga even further.

HBO is set to air the final season of its Game of Thrones adaptation next year, although the cable network is currently in development on a number of spinoff series. Meanwhile, Martin and HBO are also working on an adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor’s Who Fears Death, while Syfy is set to bring Martin’s sci-fi novella Nightflyers to the small screen later this year, and you can take a look at the first teaser trailer here.
