Todd Phillips’ Joker origin movie still moving ahead despite Jared Leto’s DCEU return

June 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday it was announced that Jared Leto is set to reprise his Suicide Squad role as The Joker for a DC Extended Universe solo movie focusing on the Clown Prince of Crime.

As we’ve known for some time, Warner Bros. has also been planning a standalone Joker movie from director Todd Phillips (The Hangover) and executive producer Martin Scorsese (The Departed), which would be separate from the DCEU banner.

Well, it seems the Leto news hasn’t impacted these plans, as Deadline is reporting that Phillips’ Joker origin movie is still moving forward, and Joaquin Phoenix remains attached to star as Batman’s arch-nemesis.

While its safe to assume that we’ll get two vastly different takes on the iconic villain with these movies, it’s certainly a little baffling that Warner Bros. is looking to have two competing Joker films, with different actors, settings and continuity, arriving around the same time – especially when it seems unlikely at this point that Batman will feature in either of them.

What’s your take on these Joker films? Are you looking forward to both, or would you prefer one over the other? Let us know in the comments below…
