Colin Trevorrow on whether The Book of Henry contributed to his Star Wars: Episode IX dismissal

June 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It’s fair to say that 2017 wasn’t the best of years for Colin Trevorrow; first, his feature film The Book of Henry was absolutely savaged by critics and derided as one of the worst movies of the year, before he then found himself fired from the director’s chair on Star Wars: Episode IX due to creative differences with Lucasfilm.

A number of rumours and theories have been floated online as to the specific reason for Trevorrow’s exit, including the reception to The Book of Henry, and during an interview with Uproxx, the filmmaker was asked whether he thought that played any part in the decision:

“You know, I don’t know,” replied Trevorrow. “I mean, I can’t really speculate on it. I’ll tell you that the reaction to Book of Henry was far more damaging than the actual movie. And I don’t mean specifically at Lucasfilm. I mean, that was a very acidic situation. And, look, every director who has worked in Lucasfilm put their heart and soul into the job and they left it all on the field, and the bottom line here is that sometimes creative people can’t find a shared path through the woods.”

Following his exit from Episode IX, Star Wars: The Force Awakens helmer J.J. Abrams signed on to close out the Sequel Trilogy, while Trevorrow has moved on to direct the as-yet-untitled Jurassic World 3.
