The Hobbit and Benedict Cumberbatch helped convince Josh Brolin to play Thanos in the MCU

June 21, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Josh Brolin was convinced to play the role of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch and The Hobbit.

Thanos, being a completely CGI creation, is a pretty impressive entity. It’s not easy creating convincing and life-like digital characters in live action films but Josh Brolin’s motion capture performance in the MCU and mainly Avengers: Infinity War, has gone down a treat with fans.

Brolin wasn’t always so confident that the role was right for him, however, being unsure of taking on a part that required motion capture. But after watching a clip online of Benedict Cumberbatch performing as Smaug in The Hobbit, he decided it was worth his while:

Speaking to SiriusXM, Brolin said: “…I saw Benedict Cumberbatch do I think it was for The Hobbit. And I looked on YouTube, when I was deciding whether I wanted to do it or not, and he was in this mo-cap suit on and he was in this big warehouse, and he’s crawling around like a snake, snapping his tongue out and doing this incredible performance…I saw that and was like, all right, that’s the bar — this is not bulls**t; this is something you have to sink your teeth into: conviction, embarrassment, all that kind of stuff. Then, I decided, yeah.”

Cumberbatch’s performance as the dragon Smaug was certainly impressive but it’s interesting that stumbling upon this clip was what it took for Brolin to become Thanos. What do you think? Does Brolin’s Thanos match up to Cumberbatch’s Smaug?
