Sonic the Hedgehog movie will see a “juvenile delinquent” Sonic teaming up with a policeman

June 23, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in February, Paramount Pictures announced that it is bringing video game giant SEGA’s mascot to the big screen, having set a live-action/CG-hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie for release in November 2019.

Since then, we’ve had an early logo for the film, as well as news that James Marsden (Westworld) and Tika Sumpter (Gossip Girl) have joined the cast. And now, during a Producers Guild of America Q&A, Paramount Pictures Jim Gianopulos has offered up the first plot details:

“[Sonic] is a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman [Marsden],” said Gianopulos when discussing producer Neal H. Moritz’s pitch for the film. “It was instantly engaging and it was good enough where you could see where it’s going.”

That sounds like quite a departure from the source material, so it remains to be seen how this approach will go down with fans of the beloved blue hedgehog.

What do you make of the idea of a juvenile delinquent Sonic teaming up with a local police officer for a buddy adventure? Can it succeed where many video game movies have failed? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
