Guillermo del Toro passed on Justice League Dark for Pacific Rim 2, says Hellboy 3 is “a little beyond Kickstarter”

July 19, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back at the end of June, it was revealed that Guillermo del Toro is no longer attached to his long-gestating Justice League Dark adaptation at Warner Bros., and speaking to The Daily Beast, the filmmaker has revealed that he was forced to make a choice between the supernatural DC project and his upcoming sequel Pacific Rim 2.

“Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of Pacific Rim 2,” said del Toro. “I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do Pacific Rim 2.”

Given that del Toro revealed earlier this month that Pacific Rim 2 will shoot in November, it would seem that Warner Bros.’ DC movie plans through to 2020 are far from set in stone, seeing as Justice League Dark was absent from the list of announced movies.

Meanwhile, with Ron Perlman lobbying for Hellboy 3 at every available opportunity, del Toro was also asked about the chances of him securing financing for the third instalment of the Hellboy trilogy:

“The hard fact is that the movie’s going to need about $120 million and there’s nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us. It’s a little beyond Kickstarter. It would be great to complete the trilogy. But in a way I don’t see the world—the industry—supporting that idea. But you know, Ron is no spring chicken, so we’d better get to it before Hellboy has to do everything from a Barcalounger.”

Next up from del Toro is the Victorian-era ghost tale Crimson Peak, which is set to arrive in October with a cast that includes Jessica Chastain (Interstellar), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Tom Hiddleston (Thor: The Dark World) and Mia Wasikowska (Maps to the Stars).
