Lily James won’t be returning for Downton Abbey movie

July 18, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last week it was announced that the long-rumoured Downton Abbey feature film is officially a go, with Universal and Focus Features announcing that production on the feature film sequel to the hit period drama is underway.

The official announcement confirmed that creator Julian Fellowes would be reuniting with the original cast from the TV series; however, speaking to People to promote her new movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, actress Lily James has revealed that she won’t be reprising her role as Lady Rose MacClare.

“My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back,” said James. “I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie it can’t be like a Christmas special and it needs to be a focused storyline. There was no space for Rose.”

While James won’t be appearing in Downton Abbey, you can catch her in the musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again from this Friday. Read our review of the film here.
