Angelina Jolie is coming to Netflix! The latest in a long-line of high-profile signings this year, Jolie Pitt has signed up make First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, Variety reports.
An adaptation of a memoir written by Cambodian human-rights activist Loung Ung about her survival through the Khmer Rouge regime, Jolie will direct and produce the film for Netflix and follows in the footsteps of her husband Brad Pitt, whose film The Operators has been bought by Netflix for the cool sum of around $60 million.
“I was deeply affected by Loung’s book,” Jolie said to Variety. “It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. And it helped me draw closer still to the people of Cambodia, my son’s homeland. It is a dream come true to be able to adapt this book for the screen, and I’m honored to work alongside Loung and filmmaker Rithy Panh.”
“We are proud to be working with Angelina Jolie in bringing this emotionally powerful and ultimately uplifting story exclusively to Netflix members around the world,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “Loung Ung’s incredible journey is a testament to the human spirit and its ability to transcend even the toughest circumstances.”
Ung was 5 years old when the Khmer Rouge regime assumed power over Cambodia in 1975, where they started a reign of terror that lasted four-years in which nearly 2 million Cambodians died.
The film will be available for Netflix customers in late 2016. Jolie Pitt’s next film, By The Sea, in which she writes, directs and co-stars with husband Brad Pitt, is due for release later this year.
