Venom director on the film’s marketing campaign and negative reaction to the teaser trailer

August 26, 2018 by Gary Collinson

After a shaky start with a teaser trailer that didn’t feature so much as a single shot of the fan-favourite character, the Tom Hardy-headlined Venom movie seems to have turned things around with its promotional efforts in the build up to its release this October.

The main trailer attracted more views on YouTube than any other Spider-Man movie to date (not to mention the likes of Black Panther, Justice League, Deadpool 2 and Wonder Woman) and the movie is tracking a record October opening at the domestic box office, with early estimates suggesting an opening weekend in the range of $55 million to $85 million.

Speaking to Total Film, director Ruben Fleischer has been reflecting on the marketing campaign, as well as the reaction to the first trailer:

“I’m really pleased with the way the marketing for this film has gone,” said Fleischer. “I think the trailer guys have done a great job of building anticipation. The first trailer was truly a teaser. I think it did tease everybody. That’s why people were pissed, because they wanted more. The truth is, the VFX weren’t ready, so that’s the main thing. But I also think it’s good to leave them wanting more. Isn’t that the first rule of entertainment, that you leave them wanting more?”

“Hopefully people will be excited they get to see him in all his glory, and won’t be disappointed by it,” he continued. “But they’ve also been, you know, really eager to see it. It’s a sign of excitement that the marketing department has been able to build through the process. If they’d given everything away at first blush, I’m not sure that people would still be invested.”
