With a phenomenal film and some great word-of-mouth, Crazy Rich Asians did something unheard of this weekend! The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, dropped only 6% at the box office; drawing in a second-weekend haul of $25M. This achievement brings the worldwide total up to an estimated $83M. It seems the characters in the film aren’t the only ones with big bucks.
What makes this low box-office drop so unexpected boils down to a few key points. The summer box office season is known for some fairly steep drops; even a hit film like The Meg saw a 53% drop in its second weekend. This type of small drop usually occurs around the holiday season, like Christmas or New Year’s Weekend. It’s also not too common for modern films to see this type of drop. The last time a low second-weekend haul made this much stir, it was Avatar’s box office domination!
Crazy Rich Asians didn’t see much competition this weekend as the only competition The Happytime Murders brought in $10M this weekend. For a comparison, Crazy Rich Asians brought that in on their Saturday night alone. The Meg did hold its own again as it brought it another $13M this weekend. That brings the Jason Statham shark film to over $100M in the US alone.
