Casey Affleck to produce and star in Fencer

August 28, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Casey Affleck is going to try and put his past sexual harassment allegations behind him as he gets back to work by producing the female-fronted sports drama Fencer, as well as appearing on screen in a small supporting role.

Collider reports that the film is being written and directed by Jasmine McGlade (Maria My Love) and “follows a hard-charging female athlete who faces personal demons and childhood rivals as she vies for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Fencing Team.” Affleck will feature in a supporting role as a demeaning fencing coach.

After winning an Oscar for his work in Manchester By the Sea, Affleck found himself at the centre of controversy following claims about inappropriate behaviour during the 2010 production of the Joaquin Phoenix film I’m Still Here.

Affleck is set to produce Fencer with Whitaker Lader through their Sea Change production banner, with the actor recently telling the Associated Press that the main aim of the company is to help try and turn the tide with regards to the under-representation of women in the film industry.
