Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed II hit at the box office, but Robin Hood tanks

November 25, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet has come out victorious at the North American box office over the Thanksgiving weekend, with the Wreck-It Ralph follow-up scoring a points victory over boxing sequel Creed II.

With $84.6 million over the five-day weekend, Ralph Breaks the Internet scored the second-best Thanksgiving debut of all time behind fellow Disney release Frozen ($93.6 million). The $175 million production added a further $41.5 million from several international markets including China, Russia and Mexico to give it $126 million to date.

“Whenever we look at sequels, they have to be additive,” said Cathleen Taff, Disney’s president of global distribution. “The filmmakers built this world out with such attention to detail that people were ready to come back and enjoy these characters. We’re really excited about the momentum as we head into the holidays.”

Meanwhile, MGM and New Line Cinema’s Rocky spinoff sequel Creed 2 also got off to a great start, debuting to $55 million over the five days, with its Friday to Saturday haul of $34 million putting it ahead of the first Creed on $29 million.

Less fortunate however was the Taron Egerton-headlined Robin Hood, with the Lionsgate release grossing just $14.2 million in its first five days – a rather disastrous opening given that the action-adventure carries a hefty $100 million price tag.

Ralph Breaks the Internet leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet – which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including a website entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trendmaking site “BuzzzTube”.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is being directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston (a writer on the original movie), and will see John C. Reilly joined by returning voice stars Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.
