Marvel’s Kevin Feige debunks rumours of R-rating for Black Widow movie

February 23, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Last month a rumour surfaced online claiming that Marvel Studios was giving consideration to making the Scarlett Johannson-headlined Black Widow solo movie the first R-rated instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The report seemed unlikely, given that Marvel has stuck firmly to its PG-13 formula over the past twenty movies, and now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that there has never been any thought of an R-rating for Black Widow.

“Yes, correct,” said Feige when asked by Comic Book if the initial rumour was false. “It never was going to be. Somebody writes, ‘I hear it’s R-rated!’ And then everybody writes it up.”

Black Widow is set to be directed by Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome), and is said to be eyeing a summer production start date ahead of an expected release on May 1st 2020. Ned Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) is currently working on a rewrite of the script originally written by Jac Schaeffer (TiMER).
