Zachary Levi calls out trolls for pitting Shazam! against Captain Marvel

February 25, 2019 by Gary Collinson

As the 2019 superhero season prepares to get underway with the releases of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel and DC Film’s Shazam!, the unfortunate side of the ‘Marvel vs. DC’ fan rivalry appears to be rearing its ugly head once again.

Over the past week, a group of trolls have been taking to Rotten Tomatoes to “review bomb” Captain Marvel, with some claiming to be leaving false negative reviews as a way of supporting the Shazam! film (whose title character just so happens to be the original Captain Marvel, before being officially renamed with the New 52 relaunch in 2011).

Well, it seems that Zachary Levi isn’t happy about this “support” and has shared a video to express his disappointment about the situation and to shoot down any notion of competition between the two movies.

“For anyone out there who thinks you’re doing me a favor, you’re doing Shazam! a favor, or you’re doing Warner Bros., you’re not,” states Levi. “This is not helping anyone or anything… There is no competition. Just because Shazam used to be called Captain Marvel way back in the day, doesn’t mean that somehow Brie Larson or Marvel’s Captain Marvel are pitted against us. Anyone out there who’s holding onto some bone like they need to pick a side and pick a fight is sorely mistaken.”

Here’s @ZacharyLevi asking fans to stop piting #CaptainMarvel and #Shazam against each other, because IT ISN’T HELPING ANYONE. He’s also calling out the fake reviews and fabricated/defamatory posts about @brielarson. —It’s time for those people to really listen. pic.twitter.com/SzL0iowj5T

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).”

Shazam will see Zachary Levi starring as the titular superhero, with Asher Angel as his young alter-ego Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard, Adam Brody as Freddie Freeman, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, D. J. Cotrona as Pedro Pena, Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield. The film is set for release on April 5th 2019.
