Wonder Woman 1984 is a “standalone film” like Bond

March 15, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

During last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot had fans scratching their heads somewhat when she stated that 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984 is “not a sequel” to the 2017 box office smash, and now producer Charles Roven has echoed that sentiment, reportedly describing it as a “stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments.”

“[Director Patty Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel,” said Roven in an interview with Vulture. “And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana/Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling.”

DC Films has been talking up its new “standalone” approach to its DC movies following the success of Aquaman, so at this point it seems the studio could be happy to play fast and loose with its continuity, a la Fox’s X-Men franchise. So does this mean 1984 is a kind of soft reboot, with Chris Pine playing a new version of Steve Trevor without any reference to the first movie? Or do you think DC  and Warner Bros. are simply looking to try and distance their upcoming movies from the previous entries in the DCEU in the minds of the audience? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
