Casino Royale’s Eva Green says James Bond should always be played by a man

March 17, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Although Barbara Broccoli previously suggested that she was open to the possibility of a female James Bond, the producer seemed to rule out gender-swapping 007 last year, and now Casino Royale actress Eva Green has weighed in with her thoughts on the subject, stating her belief that the character “should always be played by a man”.

“I’m for women, but I really think James Bond should remain a man,” said Green, who portrayed the Bond girl Vesper Lynd in 2006’s Casino Royale. “It doesn’t make sense for him to be a woman. Women can play different types of characters, be in action movies and be superheroes, but James Bond should always be a man and not be Jane Bond. There is history with the character that should continue. He should be played by a man.”

Green also went on to share her thoughts on the evolution of the Bond girl, particularly since Daniel Craig joined the franchise:

“I love the fact that the Bond girls have evolved. I originally had reservations about being a Bond girl. I didn’t want to be a bimbo. The women are now perceived differently. They are intelligent and sassy and fascinating. I loved playing Vesper. She’s the only one to get to Bond’s heart and has a big impact on his life. [Daniel Craig’s] made James Bond human. We see him flawed and vulnerable. He’s the best James Bond we have seen.”

Daniel Craig is set to make one more outing as 007 in 2020’s Bond 25. Meanwhile, Eva Green will next be seen in Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo movie, which opens this month.
