Two years after launch, Final Fantasy XV receives its final DLC

March 26, 2019 by Patrick Nolan

Final Fantasy XV Episode Ardyn is available today on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The DLC’s launch marks the end of the Final Fantasy XV saga as no other story expansions are in development.

Episode Ardyn allows players to take the role of the original game’s antagonist in a story that is set 35 years prior to the events that take place in Final Fantasy XV. In the story you will explore the events that caused Arydn’s transformation into the psychopathic, yet stylish, villain we know him as today. As you are playing as a different character in the DLC you will also have access to different powers and abilities in the several hour-long story.

There was supposed to be several other DLCs in the works that followed the stories of other side characters from Final Fantasy XV in ‘The Dawn of Future’ saga: these stories would have followed the adventures of Noctis, Aranea and Lunafreya. That saga was eventually cancelled, and it has now been repurposed into the form of a novel. It is not entirely clear what caused the cancellation of ‘The Dawn of Future’ DLCs although Final Fantasy XV director, Hajima Tabata, left Square Enix, the publisher of Final Fantasy, in 2018 which likely played a part.

This probably means that this will be the last we see of substantial single plater updates for the game: but if you are still looking for a fix of Final Fantasy XV gameplay the newly updated Comrades multiplayer mode might be the place to look.
