James Gunn reveals why he can’t use an alien race in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

September 12, 2015 by Gary Collinson

It looks like James Gunn has run into a little trouble with his plans to use a little known alien race from the Marvel comic book universe as background characters in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with the director taking to Facebook to reveal the reason why Marvel has put the block on the Sneepers making an appearance in the MCU:

“While writing Guardians scripts I like to use the names of characters from the comics as much as possible – it makes watching the movie more fun for longtime Marvel fans (one of whom is me). Characters like Kraglin, The Broker, Bereet, and Garthan Saal all originally appeared in the comics, albeit sometimes in very different incarnations. Every name I use I have to run through the Marvel legal department. Lately, in the service of building out the Marvel cosmic side of the universe, I’ve been trying to clear names of alien species we see in the background. It’s always a bummer when I can’t use a name, usually because Fox or Sony or Hasbro or whomever owns the rights. But today I received a brand new reason for being advised against calling one of the alien species Sneepers. Sneeper is a word for clitoris in Icelandic.”

The Sneepers. They look harmless, but you don’t want to rub them the wrong way…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will begin filming in February ahead of a release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States. Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebulda), Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) are all confirmed as returning to the cast.
