David Harbour joins Marvel’s Black Widow, Rachel Weisz also in talks

April 3, 2019 by Ricky Church

While we’re all awaiting the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel is already getting more films ready for its next phase of adventures. One project that has been in the works for a long while is a Black Widow solo film starring Scarlett Johansson and following the recent casting of Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family), we now have word on more additions to the film.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) has joined Black Widow in an unrevealed role while Variety announced Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) is currently in talks to join the film. While negotiations with Weisz are yet to be fully completed, Variety notes she is very likely to take what is expected to be a key role.

Black Widow is described as “an internationally set story centering on Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and an Avenger.” For obvious reasons, Marvel has been keeping coy about whether Black Widow will take place after Avengers: Endgame or be a prequel about Natasha’s time with the KGB and defection to the United States, although rumours suggest it may be the latter.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) with a script by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle) and is expected to start shooting this summer ahead of a 2020 release.
