Kathleen Kennedy says Lucasfilm planning “the next ten years or more” of Star Wars

April 20, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Disney CEO Bob Iger may have revealed that Star Wars will be taking a hiatus from the big screen following the release of this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but that doesn’t mean that Lucasfilm is slowing down behind the scenes.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that she’ll be meeting with the likes of Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in May as they plot out “the next ten years or more” of Star Wars.

“We knew we were going to close [the Skywalker Saga] up; we knew that even before we started The Force Awakens,” said Kennedy. “We are looking at the next saga. We are not just looking at another trilogy; we’re really looking at the next ten years or more. [The Rise of Skywalker] is the culmination of the Skywalker Saga; it’s by no means the culmination of Star Wars. I’m sitting down now with Dan Weiss and David Benioff…and Rian Johnson. We’re all sitting down to talk about, where do we go next? We’ve all had conversations about what the possibilities might be, but now we’re locking it down.”

Kennedy’s comments seem to support the rumours that Disney has pulled the plug on its planned Anthology movies, but Lucasfilm certainly has enough on its plate with two full trilogies in development (assuming of course they both end up receiving the green light).

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 20th 2019 with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Mabeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
