Avengers: Endgame directors discuss Katherine Langford’s role and why it was cut

May 8, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, have discussed Katherine Langford’s cut role.

Avengers: Endgame delivered on many fronts, providing a truly epic conclusion to this chapter of the MCU as well as a fitting end to many character’s journeys. One thing that didn’t come to fruition, however, was Katherine Langford’s role.

While Langford (13 Reasons Why) was cast in the movie, her part never made it to the screen. Apparently, Langford was to play an older version of Tony’s daughter who he sees in a ‘metaphysical way station’. Joe Russo described why the scene was cut on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast:

“The intention was that [Tony’s] future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant. But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie.

Anthony added that test audiences “didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level”.
