Marvel’s Kevin Feige plays coy on the future of The Defenders

July 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With the third season of Jessica Jones bringing the curtain down on Netflix’s Marvel universe, fans of The Defenders now face an anxious wait for news on the future of the street-level heroes.

So far, the only character that Marvel has suggested will return is that of Daredevil, with the press release for the show’s cancellation promising more “adventures” from the Man Without Fear at some point in the future. However, during an interview with BET, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige played coy when asked if we can expect to see the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher again.

“I don’t know,” said Feige. “There were a lot of great characters that were on those Netflix series, and I think there is a period of time…it’ll be a while before we could use any of them based on what the contracts were, so I’m not sure. And also, even answering that question is a spoiler. But there are some great Marvel characters there.”

As Feige notes, Marvel’s contract with Netflix is said to prohibit the use of the characters for two years after cancellation, at which point its extremely likely that the current cast will have moved on to new projects. So, for the time being, it seems all we can do is wait and see what the future brings…

Are you hoping to see more of The Defenders? Would you prefer Marvel to stick with the same characters, or reboot them for the big screen? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
